Pono Pet started in 2017 as a weekly dog biscuit class instructed by Rishi Ram at La'akea Village, a special needs oriented farm and farmstand on Maui's North Shore in Paia. Students mixed the ingredients together to form the dough, rolled out the treats, and cut them into biscuits.

By 2019 Pono Pet treats had expanded from the farmstand into the community.

 

Pono Pet focuses on only working with the highest quality ingredients for the prolonged health and well-being of your furry best friend. All treats are grain-free and dehydrated to maintain the vitality of the nutrients.

We source ingredients from local farmers, fishermen and restaurants to support small businesses. Pono Pet uses fresh island produce like sweet potatoes ('uala), taro (kalo), turmeric (olena), papaya, mint, parsley, fennel, and aloe vera grown organically by local farmers.

Supporting holistic, organic and sustainable operations is the foundation of our business model. We upcycle fresh fish scraps and skins that would otherwise end up in the waste stream and all packaging is made from recycled materials with plant-based, plastic free product windows.

Though the dough is now made in larger batches with a mixer, the remainder of the process is done by hand. We prepare our biscuits by rolling, cutting and packaging one treat at a time.

 

Pono Pet is a chef-created line of pet treats from da 'aina to your ohana.
